Listen to your PDFs like an audiobook.

Pages Aloud strips out headers, page numbers and footnote markers, stitches back sentences split across pages, then reads the text aloud, highlighting each word.

What gets cleaned

  • Repeated headers and footers, page numbers
  • Footnote markers (¹ ² ³) and words hyphenated at the end of a line
  • Sentences split across pages or columns, even around a figure caption
  • Slide decks: titles, text and bullets are read; diagram labels, table cells and sources are skipped

Three steps.

  1. Import

A PDF or EPUB, drag and drop, up to 200 MB.

  2. Listen

From 0.5× to 3×, back a sentence or a paragraph, table of contents, sleep timer.

  3. Pick up

Where you left off, on your computer or phone, even offline.

Reports, memos, contracts, research, and the book on your nightstand.

The dense documents of your week, and non-fiction books too. Slide decks are read title by title, bullet by bullet.

Not yet: scanned PDFs (text as images), and languages other than English and French.

“I listen to about one book a month, and at work I go through long information memos, often laid out as slides. The readers I tried read out every page number and footer, and cut sentences in half at each page break. So I built the one I wanted: it reads the text, not the page.”

Questions

Where do my files go?

To Europe: the database in Frankfurt, the files in Western Europe. Nothing is sold or used for advertising. You can export everything or delete your account from Settings. With the Kokoro voice, the text being read goes through voice providers in the United States.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in the browser, and the site installs like an app. The Android app is installed by hand; it isn't on the Play Store yet. No iPhone app for now.

And offline?

Keep a book on your device: it plays offline, with highlighting, and your position syncs when you're back online.

Which languages?

English and French, detected automatically.

What about scanned PDFs?

Not yet: the PDF needs selectable text.

Is there a limit?

On the free plan, 10 hours of Kokoro a month, then Edge voices. For everyone, about 5 hours of listening a day at most, to protect the service.
